What to do if your game or mod doesn't seem to work;
1) Check that steam client is up to date (Steam > Check for Steam Client Updates)
2) Check that Arma 3 is up to date (after checking the forum)
This one is tricky; if Arma 3 updates, many of the mods get broken. Servers often update (e.g. to 1.6), get rolled back to a previous version (1.58) while all the mods are being fixed, then get updated again (back to 1.6) when the mods are finally fixed. That's three potential Arma updates, at maybe 3 gigs a time. Check the CCG forum / shoutbox for the version you need.
If an older version is required than is being pushed by steam update, you can enter a beta code to select a legacy version. Instructions to do this are here: http://customcombatg...arma-3/?hl=beta
To check which version of Arma 3 is required to join a particular server:
a) go to the Servers tab at the top right of the CCG webpage
b) click on the IP of the server you want to join, this will take you to the gametracker page for the IP
c) click the "server variables" button, 5th in from the left below the name of the server
d) the last item in the list is the game version on the server
To check which version you have (the problem here is that doing this might begin the update process...)
a) start arma 3
b) your version is shown bottom right of the screen at the main menu
To force the process
Steam Library > Arma 3 > Properties > Check for update
3) Check that the launcher is up to date
This should be automatic; it can be forced by going to settings > update launcher
4) Check that the launcher paths are all correct
Go to settings tab. Check that
a) game paths are all correct
b) mod file locations are where you expect (check the contents of the directory before changing this)
5) Make sure that you don't have old versions of mods sitting in your Arma 3 directory.
This will cause datafile too short problems.
6) Verify mods in the launcher
This should happen automatically when you attempt to join a server. It can be done manually by going to the MOD tab, and verify each mod listed.
7) Delete your local mission file
a) Go to %UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Arma 3\MPMissionsCache\
b) Delete the file appropriate for the server you're trying to join. It will get recreated next time you join.
8) Try using a new Arma profile
You can try copying and renaming your old profile to the folder with the new name. The old filename & path should look like this:
g:\My Documents - Games Install on G Drive\Arma 3 - Other Profiles\AIRCAV\AIRCAV.Arma3Profile
Copy and rename so that the file name and the folder name are the same in the new folder.
9) If you get to here, and all is okay, you should be good to go.
Hope this helps,
